Church Members Take Refuge During Hurricanes Ivan and Frances

Sept 24, 2004

by Kris Garrison

The Pilgrims United Church of Christ in Fruitland Park, Florida brought Harry and Jean Harrison and several other parishioners through the chapel doors when Hurricane Charlie threatened the state of Florida. Then again, when Frances stormed the state, even more church members sought refuge within the dome. Because the Church of Christ does not have public bathroom facilities, it cannot be officially designated as a storm shelter by the Red Cross, but church members know they are welcome at any time and they know they will be safe there.

The Harrisons have considered a Monolithic Dome home in the past, but now that they've stayed in the dome during threatening weather, they are determined to pursue plans for building a Monolithic Dome in Florida. Jean said, "It was so nice and quiet and comfortable inside the dome during the storm that we realized we needed to look into building a dome for our home."

Weeks later while watching the news, they saw the MSNBC broadcast from "Dome of a Home" in Pensacola Beach, Florida when Hurricane Ivan was threatening the Gulf Shores. Jean said, "After that I just figured that building a dome home was meant to be for us."

Plans for a visit by the Harrisons to Monolithic headquarters sometime in the next couple months are underway. They want to get the ball rolling for their future home, but want to see a few dome homes first hand. There's no better place to come for a grand tour and lots of information. However, if you don't have the time or resources to come to Texas, visit our website for answers to your questions, design ideas and up-to-date photos of a variety of domes throughout the world. Or call our office. We would be glad to help!
