David B. South, president of Monolithic, has plenty to say on the subject of polyurethane foam. What began as a fascination in 1969 turned into bread and butter by 1971. By 1974, David and his younger brothers, Barry and Randy, owned and operated the largest spray-foam business west of the Mississippi. That same year, Souths, Inc. sprayed as much foam as all the other known polyurethane companies combined.

David has been intrinsically involved in the evolution of polyurethane foam and has spent the last 30 years accumulating a massive amount of hands-on experience.

This knowledge, which is greatly responsible for the success of the Monolithic Dome, inspired the writing of The Foam Book, a collection of technical articles about polyurethane, advice about running a spray-foam business and helpful anecdotes.

About seven years ago, David spoke on the phone with a man who had an ailing polyurethane foam business. The caller told David that he had had a lot of success in the past, but was currently struggling financially. He had phoned David, hoping to pick David's brain and learn about experiences that just might save his company.

David told him he could never answer all his questions over the phone but that he had a VERY rough draft of a book in progress that might help him. So David sent the man a copy of his draft but never heard anything back until...

A year or two later, a workshop attendee approached David and reminded him of the phone conversation they had had about his foam business. He also told David, "The book saved my life. It literally saved my business."

Since then, finishing The Foam Book has been a goal of David's and the Monolithic Dome Institute's. It is now near completion, but still unpublished. Nevertheless, we intend to finish as quickly as we can and get the information out there for foam industry professionals and all of Monolithic's customers.
