At Monolithic, Anne Sutherland Wears Many Hats
by Freda Parker
Starting with a shared birthday and many brothers
“I share a birthday with Elvis Presley,” Anne says, “except that I was born in 1960 and he was born in 1935. So I came along on Elvis' 25th birthday, but I always was and still am a big fan.”
That birth took place in Waco, Texas where Anne became an only daughter, flanked by three older, very protective brothers and a younger one. But she didn't mind that family positioning at all and says, “It was fun being the only girl. They were always great, attentive brothers, and even though we now live a little distance from each other, we try to keep up.”
For 32 years, Anne's father managed the famous Heart O' Texas Coliseum in Waco. “We were raised on rodeos, concerts and Baylor Bears basketball – to name just a few of the events held at the Coliseum,” Anne says. “There were a lot of horse shows too. My brothers and I learned our work ethics from Dad. When we were teenagers, Dad allowed us to earn a few bucks by cleaning the horse stables. We worked hard during the summers, but we also had a lot of fun at the fairs and rodeos. Our Dad was and is a strong force in our family and a wonderful man.”
Anne attended Mountainview Elementary, Lake Air Junior High and Richfield High School in Waco. She says, “I loved journalism and was the editor of my school newspaper for two years and wrote many articles. Every few weeks, I actually went to the local newspaper and put the paper together to print and sold advertisements. It was great.”
Asked about a favorite instructor, Anne quickly named Mary Brown, her 11th grade Advanced English teacher. “She was very hard on us, but we learned the most in her class. I had to write a research paper that taught me a lot, and I also got to do some creative writing.”
After graduation, Anne began journalism studies at McLennan Community College, but that got interrupted by marriage and children – four daughters and a son – and eventually a move to Italy, Texas.
Many hats
Anne began her career with the Monolithic Dome Institute (MDI) in 1996 and soon became Purchasing and Shipping Director. “I liked those responsibilities,” she says, “but I really enjoy interacting with people on more of a one-to-one basis.”
President David B. South recognized Anne's communicating skills and her talent for organizing complex projects and programs. So, he gradually headed her into new areas – each of which had something to do with public relations and sales.
In 2000, Anne became MDI's Director of Public Relations. As such, she coordinates our Annual Conference and our National Dome Tour.
She wears a few other important hats as well: Executive Secretary of MDI; Property Manager of Monolithic Holdings, the rental division of our company; Registrar of Attendees at the four Workshops Monolithic holds each year.
“I love it all,” Anne says. “I enjoy listening to the different perspectives that dome builders and our customers share with me. And I enjoy enlightening the public about domes through conferences, seminars and other media avenues.”
Those conferences sometimes take Anne out of town. But that's not a problem. “I love to travel,” she readily admits. “That's why working in the PR Department at Monolithic is a perfect fit. I get to travel and talk about Monolithic Domes everywhere I go.”
When she's not traveling for Monolithic, Anne and husband Tommy enjoy cruising and have visited the Caribbean four times – so far. She says, “I love Cozumel and the Grand Cayman Islands. The water is so blue and the sand is so white.”
After more than 12 years of wearing various hats at Monolithic, Anne says, “I love it here. It's the best job! It really does feel like family.”
For Anne, “Monolithic Family” includes co-workers she's actually related to: her sister-in-law Cindy (our Receptionist with the smiling voice) and her brother-in-law Bill (our Accountant). Of those two, Anne says, “They actually were here before I was. But none of us are planning to go anywhere else!”
Note: If you would like David South to speak at your church, school board meeting, a conference, etc. please contact Anne: asutherland@monolithic.com or 972-483-7423. She will check the calendar and make the arrangements. “We always want to help customers with information or a great speaker, and David is the best,” Anne concludes.
